The Lafayette Cheer team is a school and competition team. The team cheers at home football games, and the girls and boys home basketball games. As a competition team, there are local and state competitions as well as a potential to compete nationally. The size and type of team can vary from year to year, depending on who makes the team. From 2017 to 2020 Lafayette had a COED team and an All Girls Varsity team.
2020 was an unusual year, to say the least. COVID brought some interesting challenges. Practices were limited in stunting, masks had to be worn, the kids could only cheer at a few of the home football games and were unable to cheer at any basketball games. The competition season was unusual also. UCA Regionals and Nationals were all virtual for FCPS teams. Due to travel restrictions, the team had to film their routines, send them in and wait for their results. Varsity came in 9th at Virtual Nationals and COED finished 3rd. Luckily ,the teams were able to compete at Regionals in person. Sadly, COVID hit the team the week of regionals and two varsity cheerleaders had to quarantine. But the team still managed to take third and Co-Ed won their division, going on to get 6th at State
